Juneteenth is a celebration of the country's longest-running observance of the abolition of slavery.

History of Juneteenth 

 

Historical Tours - St. Philips Complex

Old Salem Museums & Gardens, Winston-Salem

Visit the oldest standing African American Church in North Carolina. The ending of slavery was announced in this church on Sunday, May 21, 1865. Also on the site is the reconstructed 1823 African Moravian Log Church the Negro Graveyard.

Ticket will include tour of one other Old Salem building.

From May 21 - July 4, 2011
Old Salem visitors will receive a copy of the General Orders 32 declaration of freedom for enslaved African Americans in North Carolina.

As a part of the Juneteenth Celebration an “Only An Hour Lecture Series” will be held at the St. Philips Complex in Old Salem which focuses on Christianity and race:

June 21 (Tues.) 6:30 pm `The Social Implications of a Post Racial Black Church”

Presenter: Candice M. Benbow - Sociology Faculty, Davidson County Community College.

 

June 23 (Thur.) 12:00 noon  - Ancient Slavery vs Chattel Slavery: A Comparative Analysis Presenter: Dr. Eric Greaux, Professor, Winston-Salem State University.

Buffalo Soldiers, Artisans, Book Signings

Visit Displays  that will teach about African and African American history from slavery through the civil right movement to the present!

Health Screenings by WSSU Mobile Health Unit

Diabetic Screenings, Blood Pressure Checks. 

Non-profits that serve the community will set-up displays to inform participants about their services.
